The Tema Regional Office of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), whose task is to manage tourism administration within the eastern corridor of the Greater Accra region held its second edition of tourism award ceremony last Friday in Tema.

The event which was held at the Royal Nick Hotel awarded deserving individuals, institutions and organizations who excelled, over the months in the year under review. The awards is geared towards inspiring and motivating others to also join in the promotion of tourism in the Tema Metropolis.

Royal Nick Hotel won the 3-star hotel of the year with Agbamami being the best indigenous restaurant of the year. Aqua Safari in Ada received two awards for being the best in the 1-star hotel category and the visitor attraction of the year. Imperial Peking Restaurant was chosen as the best restaurant international category. There were awards for Moses Anangura of Shai Hills Resource Reserve who won the site guide of the year award and K-Mart Travel and Tour, who swept the Travel Agency of the year for the second time running.

Ada East district assembly was adjudged the best district in terms of tourism development and the traditional catering establishment of the year went to Azi Special.

On the night, an honorary award for consistent support for tourism promotion was also conferred on a former chief director at the Ministry of Tourism and now Chairperson of the Public Services Commission, Madam Bridget Katsriku. Madam Katsriku who was the guest of honour, underscored the need to train workers in the hospitality industry to ensure that standards are maintained to enhance the experience of the visitors.

Addressing the gathering, Tema Regional Manager of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Gameli Dzordzorme disclosed that the selection of the award winners was based on a criteria which included sanitation of the kitchen area, GTA operational license acquisition, external environment, internal environment and setting as well as professionalism and staff matters. General service standards and Corporate responsibility were also considered.

The Acting Executive director of Ghana Tourism Authority Mr Charles Osei Bonsu touched on the need to harness and invest in the tourism sector to attract more tourists for revenue generation and economic development. He disclosed that a new Tourism Data Service Centre has been set up to churn out acceptable, reliable and credible data to guide policy makers and investors in order to boost tourism in the country.

In attendance was the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Tema, Mr Isaac Odamtten, MP for Tema Central, Mr Kofi Brako, and the DCE of Ningo Prampram, Alhaji Shadrach Nartey. The event was on the theme “REWARDING GOOD PRACTICE IN TOURISM”.
